{"id":1008,"date":"2020-08-26T09:32:39","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T09:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clinlabint.3wstaging.nl\/cause-for-male-infertility-discovered\/"},"modified":"2021-01-08T11:09:15","modified_gmt":"2021-01-08T11:09:15","slug":"cause-for-male-infertility-discovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clinlabint.com\/cause-for-male-infertility-discovered\/","title":{"rendered":"Cause for male infertility discovered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and Soroka University Medical Center in Beer-Sheva, Israel have discovered a new genetic mutation that prevents sperm production.<\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">Five percent of men suffer from infertility and approximately one percent suffer from azoospermia, a condition in which sperm cells are completely absent.<\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">For the first time, the researchers identified a mutation in the gene TDRD9 using whole genome genotyping and sequencing. <\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">The findings were possible only because five men from a single Bedouin family suffered from lack of sperm and spermatogenic arrest in their testis with no obvious cause. The men were being treated by Dr. Eitan Lunenfeld and his team at Soroka\u2019s In Vitro Fertilization Unit.<\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">Profs. Ruti Parvari and Mahmoud Huleihel of the Shraga Segal Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics discovered the mutation in the gene, which normally protects the full DNA sequence in sperm.
