Automated test for homocysteine

Automated test for homocysteine. An automated test for homocysteine is now available. The test is based on an enzymatic cycling method which
is adaptable to any clinical chemistry analyser. Homocysteine is a sensitive marker for folate and vitamin B12 deficiency and an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. It has also been discussed in connection with other diseases such as birth defects, pregnancy complications, psychiatric disorders and cognitive impairment in the elderly. The standard method of measuring homocysteine has been by chromatography, which is time-consuming, complex and requires special equipment and skills. Other enzymatic assays show critical interference by cystathionine, which is often elevated in dialysis patients. The DiaSys Homocysteine FS is a liquid stable, ready to use reagent. The enzymatic cycling leads to significant enhancement of the substrate and therefore to stable signals and good precision. The test has a measuring range up to 50 µmol/L and is for use with serum or plasma. There is no interference from haemolysis, lipaemia and cystathionine, and it compares well with other methods. Liquid stable calibrators and controls are provided as well as instrument applications for various analysers.

Cytometry Software

An enhanced version of a highly acclaimed flow cytometry software, Kaluza Flow Cytometry Analysis Software version 1.2 adds new multiple visualisation tools and processes data very rapidly. A quick and simple interface with radial menus makes use easier. The ability to see animated data in multiple dimensions facilitates outstanding visualisation. Additionally, millions of cells can be analysed in an instant through the simultaneous use of hundreds of graphic processors. With a minimum number of clicks, a compensation matrix can be generated from a set of controls, with a choice from a variety of algorithms to generate the matrix and export the compensated data as a CSV file. Batch analysis capability enables processing of multiple files automatically with minimal input. By using gates on the Radar Plot, users can classify events and gate in n-dimensions. This function is also easy-to-use by browsing through its Gate Table, which displays the entire gating hierarchy using Excel-like functions right inside Kaluza reports. The Comparison Plot enables creation of a snapshot to compare statistics across multiple datasets with as few as two clicks. Major product enhancements include a choice of autocompensation algorithms and auto-detection of samples; automatic batch analysis of file lists or datasets; comparison plot, gate hierarchy, plot customisation, increased bivariate plot resolutions, black background and other visualisation tools; gates that are independent across multiple datasets; improvements in autocompensation and statistics calculations; and the use of user-defined expressions in data processing.

Electronic pipettes

Ergonomically engineered to provide the highest level of comfort and precision, Acura electro electronic pipettes are available in three models. The 926X model comprises seven micropipettes, ranging in volumes from 0.1 to 1000μL; the 936 model includes three micropipettes with volumes ranging from 0.1 to 10mL; and the Acura electro 956 offers eight multichannel pipettes with dispensing volumes from 0.5 to 350µL in 8- or 12-channel configurations. A unique feature is that one control unit is capable of fitting on to any one of 27 volumetric assemblies. Each microprocessor-controlled pipette features a lightweight design for maximum hand comfort and control. Programming one of the six working modes is easy with intuitive software control. The modes include Forward, Reverse, Stepper, Dilute, Mixing and Tactile. The new Tactile mode simplifies gel loading and makes titration possible using a micropipette. Display information is reversible for right or left side reading. User-friendly features include a swift-set user calibration system, a pipetting cycle counter, an audible beep for switching on or off, a reduced shaft length on the 926XS micropipettes up to 1000µL, and the ability of the volumetric module to be autoclaved at 121°C. The height adjustment system allows the optimal fitting and ejection of a wide selection of tips, and tip ejection is facilitated with the low-pressure activation button. Pipettes automatically go into energy saving stand-by mode if unused. The battery pack can be charged quickly on the convenient charging station stand. The battery charge level is clearly visible on the liquid crystal display.

Serum uromodulin ELISA

Uromodulin (Tamm-Horsfall protein) is the most abundant protein excreted in urine under physiological conditions. It is exclusively produced in the kidney and secreted into the urine via proteolytic cleavage. It has a protective role against urinary tract infections and renal stone formation. Mutations in the gene encoding uromodulin lead to rare autosomal dominant diseases, collectively referred to as uromodulin-associated kidney diseases. Genome-wide association studies identified uromodulin as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension, and suggested that urine uromodulin could represent a useful biomarker for the development of CKD. Recently, serum uromodulin determination exhibited characteristics superior to its measurement in the urine. Low serum uromodulin concentrations were associated with ANCA vasculitis, SLE, polycystic kidney disease, IgA nephropathy and preeclampsia. Using the cut-off 125.4 ng/mL uromodulin had a unique clinical sensitivity of 92.1% and specificity of 100.0% showing that it might be used as a screening nephropathy marker. BioVendor’s patent for the use of the serum uromodulin determination for the diagnosis of nephropathy is pending.

Five infectious disease panels

Five new infectious disease panels, including a first-of-its-kind performance panel for parvovirus B19 have been launched. The HIV Genotype Performance Panel provides researchers with a diverse set of samples, both geographically and in terms of genotypes: eight of the nine panel members are HIV positive, representing eight different HIV-1 genotypes from seven countries. Made from cultured virus diluted in defibrinated plasma, this unique panel is designed to help researchers, manufacturers and labs develop, evaluate and troubleshoot a variety of HIV assays, including those for HIV RNA and the newest screening tests for combined HIV antigen and antibody. The Worldwide HBV DNA Performance Panel is a 20-member panel including samples from 10 countries with HBV genotypes ranging from A to H. It delivers a broad range of data, with information on genotype, drug resistance mutations and test results for, HBV DNA, HBsAg and HbeAg. The Anti-Hepatitis A Virus Mixed Titer Performance Panel offers customers a 21-member panel that includes members positive for IgG and IgM, contains specimens collected from 2000 to 2010, and represents a diverse range of HAV reactivities (from low to medium to high). Data are available for both new and established test methods, providing greater applicability across a broad range of laboratory and research settings. The Anti-CMV (Cytomegalovirus) Mixed Titer Performance Panel provides 21 naturally occurring panel members with data from twelve commercially available anti-CMV assays. It also features a detailed graphical representation of test member results, making it easier than ever to find and utilise relevant data. These five new infectious disease panels, as well as a diverse selection of other infectious disease panels, are available immediately worldwide.
