Azenta unveils networked 2D-coded tube readers
Azenta Life Sciences has launched two next-generation camera-based tube readers designed to enhance laboratory workflows and support cold-chain sample processing. The Mirage Connect and Cube Connect devices, marketed under the Ziath brand portfolio, feature fully integrated networking capabilities and passive cryoprotection for frozen sample management.
Compact design for robotic integration
The Mirage Connect reader features a low-profile design with a small footprint, making it suitable for use with robotic platforms and frozen samples. According to Azenta, it is the first camera-based reader on the market to feature fully integrated networking capabilities, allowing seamless operation via RJ45 connection without the need for a traditional DC power supply.
The device incorporates passive cryoprotection to reduce fogging and condensation when reading frozen samples, helping to minimise the time samples are exposed to ambient conditions during reads. The Mirage Connect includes an upgraded 16-megapixel camera, standard acoustic templates, integrated Cyclops barcode activation, and support for HTTP(S) REST API and mobile app control.
Large-format rack compatibility
The Cube Connect reader, launching soon, is designed for large-format racks including 14×14, 81-position, and 100-position cryo boxes. The device features a more compact footprint than its predecessor and includes a metal casing. It contains two 12-megapixel cameras and connects via USB-C or RJ45, eliminating the need for dedicated power adapters.
Like the Mirage Connect, the Cube Connect includes passive cryoprotection as standard and integrated Cyclops barcode reading. The device is compatible with a wide range of rack templates for both standalone use and networked laboratory environments.
Enhanced software platform
Both readers operate using the new DP5 V2.0 software, which simplifies setup and enables compatibility with multiple rack formats including 24, 48, 96, 240, and high-density configurations. The software supports REST API integration and mobile app connectivity, facilitating integration into automated systems and custom laboratory informatics platforms. Alexis MacLeod, global product manager at Azenta, commented: “With Mirage Connect and Cube Connect, we are responding to the growing demand for network-ready, cryo-compatible tube readers that support scalable and integrated laboratory environments. These products not only replace multiple existing readers, but also future-proof labs for the increasing push towards automation and remote operability.”
She added: “With these new product introductions, Azenta reinforces its leadership in coded sample management solutions, delivering reliable, connected, and efficient tools that empower researchers and laboratory professionals worldwide.”
Trade-up programme
To mark the launch, Azenta is introducing a limited-time ‘Trade-Up’ programme, offering preferred pricing to customers looking to upgrade from older reader models. The initiative supports the transition to more advanced, connected, and cryo-capable workflows.
