Thermo Fisher Scientific introduces sequential protein/DNA/RNA extraction kit for multi-omic analysis from single samples

Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced the Thermo Scientific Sequential Protein/DNA/RNA Extraction Kit, a sample preparation solution designed to allow researchers to extract protein, DNA and RNA sequentially from a single biological sample. The kit targets a long-standing practical constraint in cancer and disease research, where precious or difficult-to-replace specimens have traditionally forced investigators to prioritise one class of molecular analysis over another.

Addressing the challenge of limited samples

Clinical and translational researchers working with patient-derived material – including small biopsies, fine needle aspirates, and rare cell populations – frequently face the problem of insufficient sample volume to support parallel molecular workflows. By enabling the sequential recovery of all three analyte classes from the same starting material, the kit is intended to reduce the need to apportion limited specimens across separate extraction protocols, improving consistency when integrating data across biological layers.

The workflow is based on a magnetic bead platform, which allows protein, DNA and RNA to be recovered in solution without centrifugation steps. This design also lends itself to automation, potentially reducing hands-on time and procedural variability across laboratories.

Downstream compatibility

Purified protein produced by the kit is suitable for mass spectrometry-based proteomics workflows, while extracted DNA and RNA meet quality requirements for next-generation sequencing (NGS) applications. The ability to generate genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic datasets from an identical sample aliquot allows more direct molecular comparisons, an important consideration when studying how genetic variation, gene expression and protein-level activity interact in the context of disease.

Dr Osamu Ohara, Head of the Department of Applied Genomics, Biophysics and Clinical-omics at the Kazusa DNA Research Institute in Japan, commented: “What I really loved about the Sequential Protein/DNA/RNA Extraction Kit is how the magnetic bead workflow let me easily recover proteins, RNA, and DNA in solution without any centrifugation, automate the entire process if I wanted to, and use the purified material immediately for downstream applications.”

Applications in cancer and disease research

The kit is positioned primarily for researchers investigating cancer biology and complex disease mechanisms, where multi-omic integration is increasingly central to understanding pathophysiology. Malin Karlsson, Senior Director and General Manager of CEP & Beads within Thermo Fisher’s Life Sciences Solutions Group, noted the clinical context driving demand for such tools: “In cancer and disease research, samples often come from patients through procedures that can be difficult or invasive, and researchers may only have one opportunity to learn from them. Being able to analyse protein, DNA and RNA from the same sample allows scientists to make the most of that material and better connect molecular changes, without having to choose one type of analysis over another.”
