Thermo Fisher Scientific streamlines plasmid purification with rapid automated miniprep system
Thermo Fisher Scientific has unveiled the Applied Biosystems™ MagMAX™ Pro HT NoSpin Plasmid MiniPrep Kit, a breakthrough automation solution designed to eliminate bottlenecks in small-scale plasmid DNA isolation. The system delivers high-quality results in under 35 minutes, addressing critical efficiency demands across therapeutic research applications.
Transforming laboratory workflows through magnetic bead innovation
The MagMAX Pro HT NoSpin Kit represents a significant advancement in plasmid purification technology, capable of processing 96 minipreps from just 1 millilitre of fresh bacterial culture. The system integrates seamlessly with Thermo Scientific KingFisher™ instruments, enabling scalable operations from benchtop research to high-throughput applications.
“Laboratories of all sizes are seeking solutions that expedite the pace of research and remove bottlenecks and inefficiencies that impede the development of future therapeutics,” said Kevin Lowitz, vice president, sample preparation, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “By automating the plasmid purification process and requiring only a small amount of overnight culture, we enable scientists to conduct numerous experiments efficiently.”
Technical specifications address key research challenges
The kit employs novel magnetic bead technology combined with environmentally conscious purification chemistry, yielding up to 20 micrograms of high-copy plasmid DNA per millilitre of bacterial culture. The system eliminates traditional manual steps including cell pelleting, offline lysis, centrifugation, and filtration procedures that typically consume significant laboratory time and resources.
Performance characteristics demonstrate superior transfection efficiency compared to manual methods, with the purified DNA suitable for diverse downstream applications including transfection into sensitive cell lines, short hair-
pin vector preparation, enzymatic modifications, cloning, restriction digestion, sequencing, and in vitro transcription and translation.
Strategic applications across research sectors
The technology targets biotech and pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations, contract development and manufacturing organisations, and academic research institutions requiring transfection-grade plasmid DNA for early-stage thera-peutic and vaccine research screening.
For laboratories requiring larger-scale plasmid production, Thermo Fisher offers the complementary Thermo Scientific KingFisher PlasmidPro Maxi Processor, which processes 150 millilitres of bacterial culture in 75 minutes, producing transfection-grade DNA with over 80% supercoiled content.
The MagMAX Pro HT NoSpin Kit addresses growing demand for plasmid-based research, particularly in infectious disease, cancer, and monogenic disorder therapeutic development where rapid, reliable DNA purification is essential for advancing research timelines.
