New handheld biomass sensor offers rapid, non-invasive cell density measurement
Aber Instruments has unveiled its latest innovation in biomass monitoring technology: the OPTURA® PALM® handheld biomass sensor. This new device promises to revolutionise cell density measurement in laboratory settings, offering a non-invasive approach that could significantly streamline processes in biomedical research and pharmaceutical development.
The OPTURA PALM utilises near-infrared (NIR) bio-reflectance technology to measure cell density without breaching the sterile barrier. By emitting an NIR laser through vessel walls up to 10mm thick, the sensor can detect reflected light from cells within the media, providing a proportional measure of biomass.
Applications in biomedical research
This contactless method of measurement is particularly valuable for applications such as monitoring seed trains and determining optimal cell harvest or virus infection times. The sensor’s ability to penetrate 2.5 cm into the media allows for measurements through common labware, including shake flasks, T-flasks, and roller bottles.
Comparative performance
Aber’s scientists have evaluated the OPTURA PALM against traditional manual OD600 spectrophotometer analysis. The new sensor demonstrates comparable accuracy with significantly reduced measurement time – five seconds compared to up to 30 minutes for traditional methods requiring dilution.
Dr Lindsey Male, OPTURA product manager at Aber Instruments, explained the motivation behind the device: “Scientists tell us their off-line methods of measuring biomass in the lab are time consuming and run the risk of contaminating their cultures. This means they are loathe to keep measuring cell density and are limited in the amount of data they collect.”
Detection limits and versatility
The OPTURA PALM boasts impressive detection limits across various cell types:
– 0.5 OD600 for E. coli
– 1 x 106 for yeast cells
– 3 x 106 for Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells
This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of microbial, plant, and mammalian cell applications in biomedical research.
Data management capabilities
The device can store up to 1,000 readings, with easy data transfer via included software. This feature allows for remote use and subsequent data analysis, including the creation of custom biomass calibration curves.
The OPTURA PALM is set to launch in August 2024, potentially becoming a staple in laboratories where accurate cell density measurement is crucial to workflow.
