A new temperature control system for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns has been introduced by Torrey Pines Scientific, Inc., offering enhanced precision for both chilling and heating applications in laboratory settings.
The EchoTherm Model CO50 provides temperature control ranging from 4.0°C to 100.0°C, with precision settings adjustable to 0.1°C increments. Notable for its stability, the unit maintains temperature variations within ±0.2°C through PID control software, even at ambient temperatures. A dedicated LED indicator signals when temperature stability is achieved within these parameters.
Laboratory workflow enhancement
The Peltier-based system incorporates practical features for laboratory workflows, including memory capacity for five distinct programmes, each allowing ten steps, with automatic repeat functionality from 1 to 99 cycles. This programmability proves particularly valuable in chiral and biomedical chromatography applications, where sub-ambient temperatures are crucial for maintaining bioactive compounds.
The unit accommodates columns up to 30cm in length with standard ¼” or ⅜” diameters using supplied mounting clips, whilst larger diameter columns can be fitted by removing these clips. This flexibility allows for various analytical applications across different laboratory requirements.
Technical specifications and connectivity
For integration into laboratory systems, the CO50 features an RS232 I/O port, enabling external control via chromatography systems, gradient programming, and data acquisition. Additional practical features include an injection counter and a 30-day timer with customisable automatic shutdown functionality. The unit also incorporates a chamber drain for managing potential spills, addressing laboratory safety considerations.
The system comes equipped with a universal power supply suitable for worldwide laboratory use, accompanied by region-specific AC power cords.
