Logical Biological launches sister company to accelerate diagnostic antigen development

Logical Biological has established Logical Antigen, a specialist sister company focused on rapid customisation of high-quality antigens and biological materials. The new venture addresses critical supply chain challenges in the IVD market, offering streamlined protein purification services that reduce traditional development timelines from years to weeks through innovative extraction and engineering techniques.

Logical Biological has launched Logical Antigen, a new sister company specifically designed to address persistent supply challenges in the in vitro diagnostic (IVD) market through accelerated antigen and protein purification services. The initiative represents a strategic expansion into specialised biological material development, targeting critical gaps in availability, consistency, and performance of diagnostic raw materials.

The company addresses fundamental challenges within the IVD sector, where antigens serve as essential components in test reagent manufacturing and performance validation controls. Traditional antigen development processes have historically required years to complete, creating bottlenecks that impede diagnostic innovation and product development pipelines.

Streamlined development reduces industry timelines

Under the leadership of Managing Director Hannah McIntosh, Logical Antigen’s founding team comprises three scientists with over 20 years of protein purification experience each. Their refined methodologies enable customised antigen delivery within weeks, representing a significant acceleration compared to industry-standard development timelines.

The company’s technical capabilities encompass both native and recombinant antigen customisation, alongside serum and plasma engineering services. Native biological material processing preserves critical structural conformations, post-translational modifications, and biological activity through sophisticated extraction and purification protocols.

“Logical Antigen was born from the urgent need for faster and more flexible development of antigens and biologicals,” commented McIntosh. “By combining our specialist protein purification knowledge with Logical Biological’s industry-leading expertise, we are entering a new era of protein engineering, supporting faster and more accurate detection of diseases.”

Integrated operations support scalable manufacturing

Operating from purpose-built laboratory facilities at Discovery Park in Kent, Logical Antigen functions within the ‘One Logical’ company structure, leveraging existing commercial and business support infrastructure from Logical Biological. This integrated approach enables rapid production scaling without compromising quality standards or delivery schedules. The strategic expansion builds upon Logical Biological’s strong financial performance, with EBITDA figures increasing nearly 30%

in FY24. Chief Executive Stephane Argivier emphasised the strategic significance of the launch: “The launch of our sister company addresses today’s and tomorrow’s global challenges in the supply of critical raw materials. Hannah and the team at Logical Antigen are amongst the very best in the world at what they do, providing deep expertise in protein purification, as well as serum and plasma engineering.”

Customisation capabilities target diverse applications

Beyond antigen development, Logical Antigen will enhance customisation options for processed biospecimens, bulk serum, and plasma materials. The combined scientific expertise enables development of products precisely aligned to customer specifications, supporting diverse IVD applications from research through manufacturing scales. The launch represents the latest phase in Logical Biological’s strategic expansion programme, with additional capability developments planned for future implementation.
