Vapourtec advances flow photochemistry with high-power LED module integration
Flow chemistry technology specialist Vapourtec has launched an innovative LED module designed to expand photochemical reaction capabilities within continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) systems. The development addresses critical limitations in solid-phase photochemical processing whilst maintaining continuous flow operation.
Enhanced photochemical processing capabilities
The newly introduced LED module delivers substantial illumination power, featuring 70W input capacity with radiant output reaching 40W. The system provides wave-length flexibility across the 365nm to 700nm spectrum, with dimming control spanning 10% to 100% of maximum power output.
“The potential for exploring novel chemical space is increased by allowing the use of solid catalysis or by enabling reactions that generate solid products or solid by-products. In addition, the CSTR allows the removal of gaseous reaction products,” explained Dr Manuel Nuño of Vapourtec.
Cascade reactor architecture for scalable synthesis
The photochemical CSTR operates within a cascade configuration, enabling precise residence time distribution control throughout continuous flow processes. Integration with dual Vapourtec R4 reactor heaters supports cascades of up to eight reactors within R-Series flow chemistry systems.
Clinical applications and solid-phase chemistry
This technological advancement particularly benefits pharmaceutical development requiring solid catalyst utilisation or solid product formation. The CSTR design facilitates reagentless reactions whilst accommodating solid materials throughout the reaction pathway, addressing traditional flow chemistry limitations in heterogeneous systems.
