Takara Bio launches defined medium for high-yield extracellular vesicle production
Takara Bio Europe has introduced Cellartis® MSC EV Wonder™, a chemically defined, xeno-free culture medium designed to address scalability challenges in mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicle (MSC-EV) manufacturing. The product targets researchers developing cell-free therapeutic candidates for regenerative medicine and immunomodulation applications.
Nine-fold yield increase over conventional media
The newly launched medium delivers up to nine-fold enhancement in EV production compared to standard DMEM formulations whilst preserving critical biological characteristics. Validation studies confirm maintained canonical CD marker expression, morphological integrity, and RNA profile consistency – parameters essential for therapeutic-grade EV production.
The phenol red-free formulation utilises the same basal medium as Takara Bio’s established Cellartis MSC Xeno-Free Culture System, enabling straightforward workflow integration from cell expansion through to EV harvesting phases.
Addressing manufacturing bottlenecks
MSC-derived EVs represent an emerging therapeutic modality that circumvents safety concerns associated with administering intact stem cells. However, inconsistent yields and quality variability have constrained clinical translation efforts.
“We developed Cellartis MSC EV Wonder around a chemically defined supplement that eliminates variability and preserves essential MSC-EV features, enabling reproducible results and a smooth transition to GMP manufacturing for clinical applications,” said Clemence Bonhomme, Scientist at Takara Bio Europe.
The defined composition removes batch-to-batch variability inherent in undefined supplements, a critical consideration for manufacturing processes requiring regulatory compliance.
Clinical translation pathway
Dr Tarik Hadi, Senior Market Strategy Manager at Takara Bio Europe, noted: “Consistent, scalable production of high-quality MSC-EVs has been a bottleneck for the field. With Cellartis MSC EV Wonder, we provide a defined solution that streamlines workflows, safeguards quality, and accelerates the path from discovery to translation.” The medium’s design specification prioritises compatibility with Good Manufacturing Practice requirements, addressing regulatory considerations from early development stages.
Technical specifications
Key product features include chemically defined formulation free from animal-derived components, compatibility with existing MSC culture infrastructure, and maintenance of EV functional characteristics across multiple passages. The system supports both research-scale optimisation and process development activities directed towards commercial manufacturing.
