Azenta Life Sciences launches IntelliXcap M6 semi-automated handheld decapper for 48-format tube handling
Azenta Life Sciences has introduced the IntelliXcap™ M6 Semi-Automated Handheld Screw Cap Decapper, a 6-channel instrument designed for laboratories working with 48-format external thread screw cap tubes. The device extends the company’s existing IntelliXcap platform – which already includes the M8 model for 96-format tubes – and targets facilities requiring consistent, torque-controlled cap handling without
the need for fully automated or integrated systems.
Addressing the demands of manual cap handling
Manual decapping and recapping of screw cap tubes remains a routine but ergonomically demanding task in research, clinical, and biobanking laboratories. Repetitive manual handling carries risks of inconsistent torque application, which can result in over- or under-tightening and, consequently, compromise sample integrity. The IntelliXcap M6 is designed to mitigate these risks by delivering precise, consistent torque across all six channels simultaneously, enabling operators to decap or recap an entire column of 48-format tubes in a single action within seconds.
The instrument’s semi-automated, handheld operation is intended to occupy the middle ground between fully manual workflows and high-throughput automated platforms, offering a cost-effective option for low to mid-throughput applications in genomics, clinical research, and biobanking.
Design and operational features
The IntelliXcap M6 features an ergonomic, lightweight construction to reduce repetitive strain during extended use. Its single-action workflow and intuitive controls are intended to minimise operator training requirements whilst maintaining reproducibility standards. The instrument is supplied with a docking station that provides charging, storage, and secure cap handling between uses.
Power is supplied via a mains connection, though the device can also operate cordlessly, affording greater flexibility at the bench – a practical consideration in busy clinical laboratory environments where cable management and freedom of movement can affect workflow efficiency.
Scalable automation across throughput levels
Sofia Peniche Maria, Senior Global Product Manager, Consumables & Instruments at Azenta Life Sciences, explained the rationale behind the new model: “By introducing this model alongside our existing M8, 96-format version, we are providing laboratories that work with 48-formats with greater flexibility to match the right level of automation to their throughput needs, without compromising on sample integrity or consistency.”
The IntelliXcap M6 is positioned as part of a broader platform strategy. As Peniche Maria added: “We designed the IntelliXcap platform to deliver accessible, scalable automation that enhances laboratory workflows at every throughput level. The M6 underscores that commitment and continues that vision, helping labs of any size improve their workflows through smart, semi-automated technology.”
