Thermo Fisher Scientific expands Irish distribution capacity with new County Meath facility

Thermo Fisher Scientific has opened a 70,000 sq.ft. distribution centre in Bracetown, County Meath, Ireland, boosting the company’s in-country capacity by more than 400%. The purpose-built site is designed to service Ireland’s pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sector, providing improved access to critical materials, chemicals and temperature-sensitive products for drug discovery, clinical development and commercial manufacturing operations.

The new distribution centre marks a significant expansion of the company’s infrastructure in one of Europe’s most active life sciences markets.

The new facility increases Thermo Fisher’s in-country distribution capacity by more than 400%, enabling storage and supply of a broader product portfolio to support drug discovery research, clinical development and commercial manufacturing. The site is intended to reduce lead times for biopharma and academic organisations whilst supporting uninterrupted production workflows.

Addressing supply chain demands

Ireland has established itself as a leading hub for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, and the new facility is positioned to strengthen supply chain resilience across the sector. By expanding local inventory and accelerating fulfilment, the centre offers life sciences customers improved access to the critical reagents, chemicals and temperature-controlled materials that underpin both R&D and large-scale manufacturing.

“By expanding our local distribution capacity, we are responding more efficiently to the needs of our customers, partnering with them to improve the quality, speed and reliability of their supply chains,” said Claire Wallace, President, Research & Safety Market Division, Europe and Europe Commercial, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “The products moving through this facility support the research, development and manufacturing of therapies reaching patients around the world.”

Sustainability at the core

The facility has been designed with energy efficiency as a primary consideration. An on-site solar system is expected to generate approximately 120,000 kWh of electricity annually, and a high-efficiency heat pump enables the site to operate on 100% renewable energy. The building has achieved an A2 Building Energy Rating (BER).

Government endorsement

The centre was formally opened at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Minister Peter Burke TD, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, alongside representatives from IDA Ireland and key customers from the life sciences and academic sectors.

“This significant investment by Thermo Fisher Scientific reinforces Ireland’s position as a global leader in life sciences and biopharmaceutical manufacturing,” said Minister Burke. “The new distribution centre strengthens vital supply chain infrastructure and reflects continued confidence in Ireland’s scientific talent, pro-enterprise environment and long-term strategic vision.”
