Azenta Life Sciences introduces CryoArc Pico automated cryogenic storage system

Azenta Life Sciences has introduced the CryoArc™ Pico Automated Storage System, a liquid nitrogen (LN₂)-based cryogenic storage platform designed for biobanking, clinical research, and cell and gene therapy laboratories. The system targets facilities that require automated cryogenic sample management without the need for structural or infrastructural modifications.

Operating at −190°C, the CryoArc Pico stores samples in LN₂ conditions whilst occupying a deliberately reduced footprint. The unit is designed to integrate into existing laboratory environments, addressing a longstanding constraint in clinical and research settings where floor space is at a premium.

Integrated software and compliance features

The system includes an integrated software platform that manages sample libraries, records positional data and temperature exposure history, and supports barcode-based workflows. User access control and full chain-of-custody traceability are built in, enabling compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 requirements – a regulatory standard relevant to laboratories operating under Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) or Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions.

Reducing manual handling risks

By automating sample retrieval and storage, the CryoArc Pico aims to reduce risks associated with manual cryogenic handling, including inadvertent temperature excursions and human error. The enclosed design limits operator interaction with cryogenic components and liquid nitrogen, offering a practical safety benefit in routine laboratory use.

The system accommodates multiple labware formats and is positioned within Azenta’s broader cryogenic portfolio as a scalable entry point for laboratories seeking to expand automation capacity over time.
