BioMed X launches global call for neuroimmunology research proposals
BioMed X, an innovation engine for pharmaceutical research and development based in New Haven, Connecticut, has announced a global call for research proposals focused on neural circuit regulation of immune function. The initiative, supported by Biogen, invites researchers worldwide to submit original concepts examining the relationship between the nervous system and the immune system, with a view to identifying new therapeutic targets for autoimmune diseases.
Bidirectional communication between brain and immune system
The organisers note that communication between the central nervous system and the immune system runs in both directions, and that this interaction contributes to the onset and progression of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. Although neural pathways, neurotransmitters and glial mechanisms involved in immune regulation have been identified in prior work, BioMed X says that the underlying biology remains incompletely understood.
The call for proposals asks applicants to develop scalable experimental and computational platforms capable of systematic investigation of what the organisation terms the central nervous system-immune axis. Submissions are expected to combine neuroscience, immunology, experimental technologies and in-silico modelling in order to identify actionable therapeutic targets, rather than addressing any one discipline in isolation.
Boot camp to refine selected concepts
Researchers whose proposals are selected will attend a five-day innovation boot camp at the BioMed X Institute in New Haven from 19 to 23 October 2026. During this period, participants will work alongside mentors from BioMed X and Biogen to further develop their concepts. Following the boot camp and a subsequent evaluation, BioMed X intends to establish a new research team at its New Haven site to take forward the most promising approach arising from the process, which the organisation describes as a global crowdsourcing campaign.
The deadline for submissions is 16 August 2026, with proposals to be made via the BioMed X Career Space portal.
Leadership appointment supports US expansion
The call coincides with the expansion of BioMed X’s research activities in the United States. The organisation has appointed Dr Bahareh Eftekharzadeh as vice president, head of business development, and head of research USA. In this role, Dr Eftekharzadeh will oversee the scientific portfolio across BioMed X sites in New Haven, Ridgefield and Cambridge, support new research collaborations, and help translate scientific concepts into biomedical research programmes.
Commenting on the initiative, Dr Eftekharzadeh said: “The interface between neuroscience and immunology represents one of the most exciting frontiers in biomedical research today. By combining cutting-edge experimental platforms with advanced computational approaches, we hope to uncover fundamentally new mechanisms that could ultimately lead to better therapies for patients living with autoimmune diseases.”
