BioMed X launches Innovation Circle to break down pharma silos

BioMed X, a build-to-solve innovation engine for the pharmaceutical sector, has formally launched the BioMed X Innovation Circle, a new initiative designed to bring together leaders from across the life sciences ecosystem. The group was unveiled during the BIO International Convention 2026, held recently in the United States, and marks a further step in the organisation’s efforts to connect academic research with industry needs.

The inaugural event was hosted at the Massachusetts Pavilion in partnership with MassBio. It drew representatives from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, patient and disease-focused foundations, investment firms, academic institutions, government agencies and other organisations involved in building innovation infrastructure. According to BioMed X, the evening was structured around dialogue and networking rather than formal presentations, with the aim of encouraging exchange between people who do not typically interact.

A community built on trust

BioMed X describes the Innovation Circle as a cross-silo community drawing substantially from its existing partner network. The organisation said the initiative rests on the premise that useful ideas are more likely to emerge when people from different professional backgrounds engage directly with one another, challenge each other’s assumptions and build relationships founded on trust rather than formal hierarchy. The stated purpose of the Circle is to create space for conversation that extends beyond the usual boundaries of organisation and discipline, with a focus on the scientific, technological and societal issues relevant to healthcare and biomedical research. BioMed X has indicated that this launch event is intended as the beginning of a longer-running programme rather than a single occasion.

“We were delighted by the openness, curiosity, and quality of the discussions throughout the evening,” said the BioMed X team. “The launch event demonstrated the value of bringing together people with different expertise and perspectives to exchange ideas and build new connections. We look forward to building this community and seeing the new unusual connections and partnerships that emerge from the Circle.”

Next steps for the initiative

BioMed X has said the Circle will continue through further events, strategic workshops and discussions intended to connect participants across what it describes as traditional silos within the healthcare innovation sector.

About BioMed X

BioMed X operates a network of research institutes and venture-creating incubators situated within established innovation hubs, with the stated aim of linking academic research to pharmaceutical industry priorities. The organisation applies design-thinking and crowdsourcing approaches to drug discovery and development, working with pharmaceutical companies, venture capital firms and patient-focused foundations to identify challenges across therapeutic areas and recruit researchers to address them. Through this model, BioMed X says that early-career scientists gain experience delivering industry-relevant research outcomes intended to support the development of future therapies.
