High-sensitivity success for achy breaky hearts

, 23 March 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

In May 2018, a rapid assessment and risk stratification pathway was implemented in Unscheduled Care for patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome, using high-sensitivity (hs) Troponin T. Patients could be ruled out and discharged within one hour of presentation to the Emergency Department. The assay was validated and its safety and clinical effectiveness assured through […]

Approaches to solving gadolinium-based interference in selenium measurement

, 23 March 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element in many biological processes. Se is measured in many sample matrices. The gold standard Se measurement method is inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Monitoring alternative isotopes, applying correction factors, and utilizing ICP with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer are approaches to mitigate the interference of doubly-charged gadolinium.

Rapid supercritical fluid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (SFC-MS/MS) for the routine quantification of retinol and α-tocopherol in human serum and plasma

, 23 March 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

As interest in vitamins A and E has increased in recent years, so too has the need for rapid and reliable methods by which these compounds can be assayed. The development of a supercritical fluid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (SFC-MS/MS)-based method with an automated extraction procedure provides faster analysis than other chromatographic-based methods and improved specificity.

Use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for rapid disease screening

, 23 March 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that in such situations there are some simple questions that benefit from fast answers: Who has got the disease; Who has had the disease; and Who remains unexposed. The technique of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy has the potential to help answer these questions and we caught up with Professor Berlo (McGill University, […]

Insight into advances in diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus

, 18 January 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

Barrett’s esophagus has been established as a pre-cancerous condition that increases an individual’s risk of developing esophageal cancer, and so regular monitoring people with Barrett’s esophagus can help improve the survival rates of those who develop cancer. However, diagnosis is usually by endoscopy, which is invasive, unpleasant and resource-intensive. CLI caught up with Charlene Tang […]

Thiopurine pharmacogenomics and pregnancy in inflammatory bowel disease Andoh A, Kawahara M, Imai T, et al. J Gastroenterol 2021; 56(10): 881–890 The thiopurine drugs azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine are widely used for the maintenance of clinical remission in steroid-dependent inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Thiopurines are recommended to be continued throughout pregnancy in IBD patients, but conclusive […]

Therapeutic drug monitoring of favipiravir, a potential COVID-19 drug candidate

, 18 January 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

The COVID-19 outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that was declared a pandemic in March 2020 has resulted in a the development of diagnostic tests and vaccines at an unprecedented speed. The development of de novo therapeutics, though, takes considerably longer, which is where the repurposing of existing drugs is being […]

How the COVID-19 response was informed by – and informs – our battle against other global health crises

, 18 January 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the critical importance of diagnosis and access to these services, both at the individual and at a population level. The pandemic has also impacted the delivery of diagnostics and care for other medical conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, but similarly, lessons learned with COVID-19 can also be applied to improve diagnostic […]

Colorimetric histology: benefits, opportunities and future directions

, 18 January 2022/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

Despite rapid advances in the areas of genomics and digital image analysis, cancer diagnosis remains largely reliant on tissue/cellular morphological assessment by an expert pathologist. Here, we summarize a newly developed approach to histology, based on a plasmon-induced colour change which provides instant, label-free visualization (or contrast) of cancer cells, distinguishing them from other cells […]

With a little help from the patients: Automated measurement of tacrolimus from dried blood spots

, 18 November 2021/in Featured Articles /by panglobal

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of tacrolimus is mandatory because this immunosuppressive drug that is frequently prescribed in transplant patients, exhibits a high interpatient pharmacokinetic variability. This study explored the possibility of performing TDM using dried blood spots that can be collected by the patients themselves and that can be analysed by a fully-automated extraction module […]
