A new and unique research use only (RUO) assay launched in partnership with Future Diagnostics will help to normalize free vitamin D (FVD) levels despite the effects of variations in Vitamin D Binding proteins (VDBP) that occur in certain pathologies , e.g. pregnancy, liver disease, end stage renal disease and dialysis . Conventional total 25 OH Vitamin D assays by LC/MS-MS or immunoassay can give misleading results in these physiological conditions because these assays utilize a sample pre-treatment step that destroys the VDBP. The DIAsource Free 25 OH Vitamin D ELISA provides a more accurate assessment of the bioactive FVD in the patient sample. Now available is an improved liquid method for H. pylori detection from biopsy samples, the Helicobacter pylori UFT300 quick test. The detection is based on the detection of bacterial urease activity in gastric biopsy specimens. A gastric mucosa colonized by H. pylori is invariably inflamed, and can lead to atrophic gastritis, which has been linked with peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, two of the most important diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract. A new generation of ELISAs provides standardized, automated analysis of beta-amyloid (Aß) peptides (Aß 1-42 and Aß 1-40) and total tau (T-tau) proteins in cerebrospinal fl uid (CSF), facilitating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages. The concentrations of these biomarkers reflect the Alzheimer’s-specific neuropathological changes in the brain. A significant decrease in Aß 1-42 is observed as many as 5 to 10 years before the start of cognitive changes. Aß 1-40 remains unchanged. The determination of the ratio Aß 1-42 to Aß 1-40 increases the efficiency of early diagnostics and might help to discriminate Alzheimer’s disease from vascular dementia. The concentrations of T-tau and phosphorylated tau (P-tau) increase when patients develop advanced neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment. Th e Aß 1-42, Aß 1-40 and T-tau ELISAs have been developed by Euroimmun in collaboration with ADx Neurosciences. They are based on a sandwich principle employing well-characterized capture antibodies. This matrix-independent methodology ensures extremely high consistency in results. Zinc is used as a marker of the secretory function of the prostate gland. Low values indicate an abnormal disruption of the secretory function, possibly as a result of obstruction of the conducts due to acute or chronic inflammation. The determination of zinc in serum provides information about the metabolism of proteins and nucleic acids, and the functioning of the immune system, which is required for wound healing. A severe blood zinc deficiency is linked with depressed growth and stunting and increases the incidence of infectious diseases. Less severe zinc deficiencies are linked with immune function disorder, diarrhea, altered cognition, alopecia, vision defects and other adverse clinical conditions. Ingestion of a zinc-contaminated diet involves high blood concentrations and is associated with abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea. Heparinized plasma samples are preferred to serum for zinc analysis to avoid possible zinc contamination from erythrocytes, platelets and leukocytes during clotting and centrifugation.
