System to facilitate diagnosis of diseases in remote areas

Performing a haematology and biochemistry screen in 15 minutes is never normally achieved without sending samples off to a lab, which is virtually impossible in locations such as rural Africa. A health screening package based on dry reagent technology, the revolutionary design of the Insight Diagnostic System will now allow a full haematology, biochemistry and infectious disease profile to be performed within a short time period using just capillary blood at the point of care. The 3-component system combines the SpotChem EZ clinical chemistry analyser, the QBC Autoread Plus haematology analyser and the QBC ParaLens Advance fluorescence microscopy system. The dry reagent technology eliminates many of the issues faced by clinicians relating to storage space, biohazardous waste and spillages. The system does not require any regular servicing or maintenance. The clinical chemistry analyser is easy to use and provides the capability to test a total of 22 biochemistry parameters. The haematology system uses specially designed capillary tubes and can measure nine clinically significant haematology parameters in just seven minutes. Once the haematology process is complete, the same capillary tube containing the patient sample can be immediately examined for infectious disease parasites, including malaria, filariasis and trypanosamiasis, using the fluorescence microscopy system.

Specifically designed for IVD manufacturers for use in conjunction with immunodiagnostic assays, Binding Site’s RF/IgG absorbent reagent is distinctively formulated to remove both IgG and RF-IgM molecules from human serum. In principle, the reagent effectively prevents these components from non-specific binding within the test sample. This eliminates certain interference effects found with some immunodiagnostic assays that are aimed at quantitatively determining human antigen-specific IgM immunoglobulin concentrations, as found in various diagnostic disease states. As such, the RF/IgG Absorbent Reagent serves to enhance overall specificity by reducing both the number of false positive test results from native IgG components and the number of false negative test results from native RF-IgM components. ELISA kit for anti-DGP antibody detection

Many recent studies have demonstrated that Anti- Deamidated Gliadin Peptide antibodies (anti-DGP) are better markers for coeliac disease than the normal Gliadin, which is widely used as a diagnostic criterion all around the world. To satisfy the latest trends in the immunology laboratory and provide the newest technologies for autoimmune disease diagnosis, a new ELISA kit for the detection of Anti-DGP antibodies is now availble from BioSystems. The kits enable the quantitative determination of antibodies against deamidated gliadin protein epitopes (DGP) that can support the diagnosis of coeliac disease, giving additional information in combination with the company’s Anti-tTG ELISA test, and with greater cost-effectiveness. Anti DGP antibodies are also a good predictive CD marker for children younger than two years old with chronic enteropathy.

Immunochromatographic assay for hepatitis C virus

It has been estimated that 3 to 4 million people are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) each year. Four out of five people develop chronic hepatitis C infection, which can subsequently lead to liver cirrhosis and/or liver cancer. Early detection is the key to combating hepatitis; hepatitis C infection can be effectively controlled or treated if it is diagnosed early. HCV ELISA and rapid tests are widely used for screening and diagnosis of hepatitis C infection. These tests use specific antigens from the structural region and non-structural regions of the virus to detect the presence of antibodies to HCV. Reactive samples from screening tests are then confirmed by immunoblot assay. The MULTISURE HCV Antibody Assay is a qualitative immunochromatographic assay, intended for the detection of antibodies specific to HCV core, NS3, NS4 and NS5 antigens. The test is based on the capture of HCV antibodies using immobilised HCV recombinant antigens on a nitrocellulose membrane and the subsequent detection of captured analyte using goat anti-human IgG conjugated to colloidal gold. It has been developed from the patented reverse-flow test platform, giving greater sensitivity and easy-to-read visual signals. Similar to a confirmatory immunoblot, this assay can detect and differentiate the structural and non-structural HCV proteins. The test result pattern may, therefore, offer information such as the possible phase of the Hepatitis C infection. This simple and rapid assay takes only 15 minutes and is easy to use. It is an instrument-free platform and does not require highly trained personnel to perform the test, thus making it suitable for use in a point-of-care setting. With shortened turnaround time, patients are diagnosed early and have wider access to treatment and care.
