Agilent launches S540MD slide scanner system for European pathology laboratories
Agilent Technologies has introduced the S540MD Slide Scanner System, a whole slide imaging (WSI) platform designed for high-throughput digital pathology workflows in clinical laboratories.
The system, now available for sale in key European markets, is developed in collaboration with Hamamatsu and is the Agilent-branded version of the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer S540MD Slide Scanner System.
High-capacity scanning with AI-assisted tissue detection
The S540MD accommodates up to 540 slides with continuous loading capability and standard rack compatibility. Automated scanning modes and AI-assisted tissue detection are integrated into the platform, enabling laboratories to digitise glass slides at volume and to implement digital and AI-driven workflows. The system is positioned to address growing pressures on pathology laboratories to improve diagnostic precision and operational efficiency while managing increasing sample volumes and case complexity.
Nina Green, vice president and general manager of the clinical diagnostics division at Agilent, commented: “The introduction of the Agilent S540MD Slide Scanner System marks an important advancement in our commitment to equip pathology laboratories with advanced digital technologies. This initiative facilitates the acceleration of diagnostic workflows and supports improved
patient outcomes.”
Regulatory clearance and market availability
The S540MD is initially available as an in vitro diagnostic (IVD) device across Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Luxembourg, and Italy under IVDR; in the United Kingdom under MDR2002; and in Switzerland under IvDO. Agilent has indicated plans to expand availability into additional European countries throughout 2026.
Integration within Agilent’s digital pathology portfolio
The new scanner extends Agilent’s digital pathology offering, which spans staining through to AI-based decision-support tools. Green added: “Our partnership with Hamamatsu demonstrates Agilent’s ongoing dedication to delivering integrated, fully interoperable solutions to address the evolving needs of clinical laboratories.”
The company says that the system is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing laboratory workflows, supporting the transition away from traditional glass slide processes that can limit turnaround times and overall throughput.
