Bio-Rad expands PCR portfolio with thermal cyclers built for tighter lab budgets
Bio-Rad Laboratories has launched two new thermal cyclers – the PTC Harmony 96 and PTC Harmony Deepwell – extending its next-generation PCR instrument portfolio to a wider range of laboratory budgets without compromising on thermal performance.
What’s new in the PTC Harmony line
The PTC Harmony instruments are designed to deliver the same thermal performance as Bio-Rad’s established PTC Tempo line, but in a more streamlined form factor. Key features include manual lid operation, an intuitive user interface, and flexible connectivity options intended to simplify protocol management. The cyclers are suited to common PCR workflows including sequencing, cloning, and genotyping.
Targeting academic and biopharma users
The new line is positioned specifically at academic researchers and biopharma laboratories seeking reliable, high-throughput PCR without the cost typically associated with premium instrumentation. According to Stephen Kulisch, Vice President of Genomics Product Management at Bio-Rad: “Tailored to academic and biopharma customers interested in simplified and affordable, high-performance devices, the new line of PTC Harmony Thermal Cyclers delivers the same reliability and high quality that Bio-Rad has been providing for over 35 years.”
Engineering and manufacturing heritage
Bio-Rad, which reported $2.6 billion in revenues in 2025 and employs approxi-mately 7,400 staff globally, has manu-factured thermal cyclers for over three decades. Kulisch added that the company continues to “develop and manufacture robust and efficient thermal cyclers, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of all scientists.”
Deepwell format broadens application range
The inclusion of a Deepwell variant alongside the standard 96-well format extends the utility of the Harmony line to higher-volume applications, offering laboratories greater flexibility in experimental design without requiring investment in separate instrument platforms.
The PTC Harmony 96 and PTC Harmony Deepwell are available now.
